Frequently asked questions

About the service, translation quality, and privacy — short and to the point.

What is Targemus?

Targemus is an AI-powered translation service built for work that's taken seriously — contracts, books, technical documentation, app interfaces. It's for texts where precise meaning and natural phrasing matter, not a rough word-for-word rendering. Unlike general-purpose translators, Targemus works with style and context, and a built-in post-editor lets you refine the result segment by segment.

How is Targemus different from ordinary translators?

Three things set it apart. First, style and context: you pick one of 11 professional styles, and the translation is shaped to fit — a legal text reads like legal writing, a literary one stays alive. Ordinary translators return a single generic output no matter the text. Second, the post-editor: your translation is laid out as "source — translation" pairs that are easy to review and correct segment by segment. Third, a personal glossary: you define how key terms are translated, and Targemus keeps to it throughout.

What translation styles are there, and how do I choose?

Every text has its own job, so Targemus offers 11 styles. A quick guide:

  • Fiction — literary prose and storytelling; a lively, expressive voice, also good for entertainment content.
  • Marketing — ads, sales, and presentation copy.
  • Journalistic — articles and media pieces.
  • Non-fiction — popular-science writing; leans toward an encyclopedic register.
  • Scientific — a strict academic register.
  • Business — business correspondence and documents.
  • Financial — financial and reporting documents.
  • Software localization — interface strings and UI text.
  • Legal, Technical, Medical — the corresponding professional texts.

When in doubt, choose the style closest to your text's subject.

What happens if I pick the wrong style?

Between neighboring styles where precision matters more than voice — Technical, Scientific, Medical — the difference is usually minimal. But translating, say, a legal document in the Fiction style, or a marketing text in the Technical style, can cost some naturalness and accuracy. Occasionally a style change helps: a journalistic piece rendered in the Fiction or Marketing style can come out more expressive with no real loss of quality. As a rule, choose the style closest to your text's subject and purpose.

How accurate are the translations?

With enough context (from 1,000 characters) and the right style, most language pairs produce a result close to the work of a professional translator with editorial review — under favorable conditions, accuracy and naturalness reach up to 99%. That cuts post-editing time many times over. For low-resource languages — those with little data in open sources — quality may be lower. For the best result, translate in large chunks rather than a few sentences at a time. Any automatic translation is worth checking before you use it for high-stakes work.

Does Targemus add anything of its own?

No. Targemus translates what's written and doesn't add facts that weren't in the original — you get one predictable result, not a list of options. The exception is styles built around adaptation: in Fiction and Marketing translation, the model may not just translate but adapt the text to the target language and audience. In those cases there can be deliberate differences between source and translation, in the service of naturalness and impact.

Is Targemus suitable for legal and official documents?

Yes — there are dedicated styles for legal, financial, and technical texts, and Targemus handles them well. That said, the service gives you a high-quality draft translation, and responsibility for how the result is used stays with you. For official or legally significant documents, review the translation and, where required, have it certified by an authorized professional.

How many languages and styles does Targemus support?

Targemus supports 59 languages and 11 translation styles: Business, Software localization, Marketing, Medical, Scientific, Non-fiction, Journalistic, Technical, Financial, Fiction, and Legal. Any direction between languages is available, including rare pairs. Each "language pair + style" combination has its own configuration — 37,642 in total.

What is the post-editor?

The post-editor splits your text and its translation into small fragments and shows them as convenient "source — translation" pairs, without breaking the overall context. That makes the translation easy to review, correct segment by segment, mark finished fragments, and export. These are the familiar capabilities of professional translation software (CAT-tools), but in a simple, clear form without a cluttered interface. By default, text is split into segments by sentence. Turn on "Line-by-line segmentation" only when each line should be its own segment — for example, when translating interface strings or lists.

What is the glossary, and why do I need it?

The glossary is your personal dictionary of terms. You set how important, consistency-critical words should be translated, and Targemus sticks to it throughout the text. The glossary is tied to a specific language pair and style, so each project can have its own terminology. Before translating large texts, it's worth filling in the glossary — it prevents loose handling of key terms.

Can I translate documents and files?

Yes. Besides text, you can upload a .docx or .txt document — drag it into the window or pick it manually. The finished translation exports as TXT, DOCX, and CSV, and as a "source — translation" table. File mode is also handy for long material: it helps you translate large texts in one go. The list of supported formats will grow over time.

Is there a limit on text length?

A single request has a volume limit that depends on your plan and is shown in the interface. For long material, use file mode — it helps translate large texts and documents in full. A monthly character limit for your plan also applies.

Is translation history saved?

Yes — recent translations are always at hand to open, edit, or download. History is stored only in your browser: the last 10 translations for 30 days, after which older entries are removed automatically. If you clear your browser data, the history is deleted entirely.

Do you store my texts?

No. We don't store the texts you translate — once the translation is done, they don't remain on our servers. Your translation history is saved locally, in your browser, not with us. For the sake of privacy we deliberately gave up cross-device sync: a translation made on one device won't appear on another. Your personal glossary is kept in your account so it's available across sessions.

Do you train AI on my texts?

No. Neither we nor the model providers use your texts to train AI. We work through APIs where, under the providers' terms, data isn't used for training and is kept only for a limited time for safety, after which it's deleted automatically. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Which AI models does Targemus run on?

Targemus runs on today's leading AI models, augmented with our own enhancements: each language pair and each style has its own configuration, calibrated on large volumes of data. It's those enhancements, rather than the model on its own, that make a translation sound natural and on-style. We don't disclose the specific technology and don't tie ourselves to a single provider — that lets us pick the best solution for each task.

Do I need to register, and is there a free version?

Yes, you need a free account to get started. A free character allowance is granted once, so you can try the service and judge quality on your own texts. On the free trial a single translation has to be at least 500 characters: it is meant for real passages rather than single phrases. For regular work, paid plans come with a monthly allowance and no such restriction.

How is the price of a translation calculated?

Billing is based on the number of characters in the source text, spaces included. Each plan has its own monthly character limit and a per-request volume limit. The limits are visible in the interface, so your usage stays transparent, with no surprises.

Are characters charged if a translation fails?

If a request fails for a technical reason, characters are not charged. There's one exception: when the model declines to translate material on ethical grounds (for example, direct incitement to violence), the request counts as completed — characters are deducted from your limit, but no translation is returned. In all other cases you pay only for translations you actually receive.

Who processes payments, and is it secure?

Payments are handled by Paddle, our authorized reseller (Merchant of Record). We don't store your card details — they're processed by Paddle as a separate payment operator. On your bank or card statement the charge appears as PADDLE.NET* TARGEMUS, so it's easy to recognise.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel at any time: in your account, under “Subscription”, click “Manage subscription” — that opens the Paddle portal, where the cancellation is made. After cancellation, access continues until the end of the paid period, and there's no auto-renewal.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within our Refund Policy. A full refund within 14 days is possible if you haven't used the service yet — that is, no translation has been performed. Once even a single character is spent, the service is deemed rendered for that month. For a yearly subscription that means we retain the cost of one month at the monthly plan price and refund the rest. Refunds go through Paddle. See the Refund Policy for full terms.
